Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions.
The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.

There was a time in my life that I felt I was doing so much for people, but I did not feel appreciated. I hid that feeling under a mask, but I became more and more resentful. I didn’t understand that I was placing love under conditions; that I wasn’t doing acts of kindness from a place of love but for a fear of not being loved. In turn, it would make me angry internally and I carried that feeling. I validated the feeling by having conversations with friends, “so-and-so didn’t do this and wasn’t that bad?”.It felt good to vent initially, but I still had that feeling of resentment.

I was expecting an acknowledgement, a “well done” and felt like I hadn’t been seen or heard.

I measured how good life was by how well it went according to my plan and expectations. And although I had built a seeming good life with family, holidays, possessions and professional career, I wasn’t truly happy.

So, what changed?

I got introduced to the power of gratitude.

What is gratitude to me? It’s expressing appreciation, for a person, an event, anything that helps you feel the feeling of what I would call “fullness”.

Fullness of the heart.

Food for the soul.

What you focus on grows.

I came to realise that I had been focusing on how much I felt like I was being taken for granted. I was so afraid that if I was grateful for the small things, I would somehow devalue “the bigger things that matter”. As if there was a limit of acts of kindness that could go around in the world.

The attitude of gratitude makes a difference in my life. It makes me value what life brings at a different level.

As a result, it makes me feel calmer, less stressed and more successful in life.
